| 10 things that you don’t know about ‘NOKIA’ Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:46 AM PDT 1)The ringtone "Nokia tune" is actually based on a 19th century guitar work named "Gran Vals" by Spanish musician Francisco Tárrega. The Nokia Tune was originally named "Grande Valse" on Nokia phones but was changed to "Nokia Tune" around 1998 when it became so well known that people referred to it as the "Nokia Tune." 2) The world's first commercial GSM call was made in 1991 in Helsinki over a Nokia-supplied network, by Prime Minister of Finland Harri Holkeri, using a Nokia phone. 3) Nokia is currently the world's largest digital camera manufacturer, as the sales of its camera-equipped mobile phones have exceeded those of any conventional camera manufacturer. 4) The "Special" tone available to users of Nokia phones when receiving SMS (text messages) is actually Morse code for "SMS". Similarly, the "Ascending" SMS tone is Morse code for "Connecting People," Nokia's slogan. The "Standard" SMS tone is Morse code for "M" (Message). 5) The Nokia corporate font (typeface) is the AgfaMonotype Nokia Sans font, originally designed by Eric Spiekermann. Its mobile phone User's Guides Nokia mostly used the Agfa Rotis Sans font. 6) In Asia, the digit 4 never appears in any Nokia handset model number, because 4 is considered unlucky in many parts of Southeast/East Asia. 7) Nokia was listed as the 20th most admirable company worldwide in Fortune's list of 2006 (1st in network communications, 4th non-US company). Unlike other modern day handsets, Nokia phones do not automatically start the call timer when the call is connected, but start it when the call is initiated. (Except for Series 60 based handsets like the Nokia n70,n73) 9) Nokia is sometimes called aikon (Nokia backwards) by non-Nokia mobile phone users and by mobile software developers, because "aikon" is used in various SDK software packages, including Nokia's own Symbian S60 SDK. 10) The name of the town of Nokia originated from the river which flowed through the town. The river itself, Nokianvirta, was named after the old Finnish word originally meaning sable, later pine marten. A species of this small, black-furred predatory animal was once found in the region, but it is now extinct. |
| Posted: 01 Jun 2011 04:43 AM PDT GSM (Global System for Mobile communications: originally from Groupe Spécial Mobile) is the most popular standard for mobile phones in the world. Its promoter, the GSM Association, estimates that 82% of the global mobile market uses the standard GSM is used by over 3 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories. Its ubiquity makes international roaming very common between mobile phone operators, enabling subscribers to use their phones in many parts of the world. GSM differs from its predecessors in that both signalling and speech channels are digital, and thus is considered a second generation (2G) mobile phone system. This has also meant that data communication was easy to build into the system. In india Vodafone, Airtel, iDEA, BPL use GSM Signaling. Reliance GSM and Tata DOCOMO have launched their GSM services recently based on Dual License acquisition. Cost of instrument is low but service cost is high. Many options are available while choosing handsets. CDMA (Code division multiple access) is a channel access method utilized by various radio communication technologies. It should not be confused with the mobile phone standards called cdmaOne and CDMA2000 (which are often referred to as simply "CDMA" ), that use CDMA as their underlying channel access methods. One of the basic concepts in data communication is the idea of allowing several transmitters to send information simultaneously over a single communication channel. This allows several users to share a bandwidth of frequencies. This concept is called multiplexing. CDMA employs spread-spectrum technology and a special coding scheme (where each transmitter is assigned a code) to allow multiple users to be multiplexed over the same physical channel. CDMA is a form of "spread-spectrum" signaling, since the modulated coded signal has a much higher data bandwidth than the data being communicated. In India MTNL Garuda, Reliance, MTS, Ping, Tata & Virgin Mobile are CDMA signaling providers. Cost of instrument is high but service cost is less. Not many options are available for choosing handsets. What is 2G ? 2G is current signaling, that is second generation of mobile service. This allows you to make basic phone calls, send SMS, Voice Mails and send receive basic emails. Existing mobiles are capable of providing this service and service cost is cheap. Speed: 10kb/sec What is 3G? 3G stands for Third Generation of Mobile Service. This will allow you to perform more on your mobile phone. - Global roaming - Send/receive large email messages - High-speed Web - Navigation/maps - Videoconferencing - Live Television streaming - Electronic agenda meeting reminder - Lots of high bandwidth applications like Live Stock updates, view product and shop instantly, Streaming Radios Service. You need to buy Mobile handset which is capable of receiving 3G service. These phones are little costly. You will also need to subscribe to 3G service for high bandwidth service. 3G service is not cheap and requires you to pay cost for high data transfer. Speed: 144kb/sec - 2mb/sec |
