Google Drops Support for IE7, Other Aging Browsers

Posted: 03 Jun 2011 08:37 AM PDT

Google Drops Support for IE7, Other Aging Browsers

Google will drop support for Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7, and Mozilla's Firefox 3.5 browsers for its online apps, including Gmail and Docs.
"Beginning August 1, we'll support the current and prior major release of Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari on a rolling basis," said Venkat Panchapakesan, who heads Google's enterprise engineering team, in a company blog Wednesday. "Each time a new version is released, we'll begin supporting the update and stop supporting the third-oldest version."
By that scheme, Google will stop supporting IE7, Firefox 3.5, Apple 's Safari 3 and its own Chrome 9, all which have released two newer versions.
IE7, for example, has been superseded by IE8 and IE9; the same goes for Firefox 3.5, which has been replaced by Firefox 3.6 and Firefox 4.
After Aug. 1, users running those browsers may have trouble with some features in Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Talk, Google Docs and Google Sites. At some point, those apps may stop working entirely.
"For Web applications to spring even farther ahead of traditional software, our teams need to make use of new capabilities available in modern browsers," said Panchapakesan. "Older browsers just don't have the chops to provide you with the same high-quality experience."
Panchapakesan didn't mention Opera Software's Opera browser in his blog, an omission that prompted many users to leave comments.
"Lack of support for a browser as standards-compliant as Opera is absurd," complained someone identified as "Isildur."
Opera accounts for approximately 2% of all browsers, according to Web measurement company Net Applications, less than one-sixth the share of Chrome and less than one-third that of Safari.
The numerous "where's Opera"-style comments prompted one wag to say, " Wow, every existing Opera user left a comment here."
By Net Applications' statistics, the browsers Google will retire represent a minority of those in use.
Last month, IE7 accounted for 7% of all the browsers used worldwide, said Net Applications on Tuesday. Firefox 3.5 owned an even-smaller share of 1.4%, while Safari 3 accounted for only 0.1%. Altogether, the browsers destined for the dustbin controlled less than 9% of the browser market.
This was not the first time that Google has warned customers and users to upgrade to a newer browser. In January 2010, the search giant said it was dumping Google Docs support for IE6, theMicrosoft browser that still accounts for 10.4% of all browsers in use.
Many IE6 users, however, are in China, where the government blocks access to Google's online applications, and with which Google has a contentious relationship .
But while Google and others have stopped supporting the 10-year-old IE6, Google is one of the first online software vendors to drop 2006's IE7 from a support list. Microsoft, for instance, has committed to supporting IE7 on Windows XP until April 2014, and on Vista for three years longer.
Panchapakesan urged people running one of the browsers on Google's kill list to upgrade to a newer edition.
The end-of-support plan for Google Apps will not disrupt access to its search site using older browsers.

More than E-mail at Stake in Google Gmail Attack

More than E-mail at Stake in Google Gmail

Attack By Mohan Kumar

There is a lot of talk--and diplomatic tension--this week related to reports that attacks originating from China have breached Google Gmail accounts, including those of senior US government officials. The focus is on e-mail, and whether or not e-mail accounts were hacked, but a breached Gmail account is a much bigger prize than just the e-mail account it is attached to.

Google claims that the spear phishing attacks that targeted Gmail accounts of White House staff, and successfully exposed accounts of senior US government officials, high-ranking military personnel, and political activists, originated from China. China denies any state-sponsored involvement in the attacks, and the FBI is investigating.
Shady hackerA hacker with access to Gmail credentials can get much more than just e-mail.The Gmail e-mail accounts are getting all of the attention. Catalin Cosoi, head of theBitDefender Online Threats Lab, notes in a blog post, "Just as in the previous attack against the Gmail service, we can assume that cyber-criminals went after sensitive documents the users might have inadvertently forwarded from their business inboxes."
But, it would be more accurate to say that Google accounts are being targeted or compromised--not just Gmail. Depending on the extent the hacked account relies on Google, there is potentially much more at stake than just the documents that might be forwarded as a file attachments from Gmail. There is no differentiation between hacking a Gmail account, and hacking the rest of the diverse array of Google services.
I am not saying that attackers can't glean valuable information from hacking the Gmail account itself--just that e-mail only scratches the surface of what is breached when an attacker compromises a Google account. With the Gmail username and password in hand, an attacker can log in to the victim's Google Calendar and find out where they're going to be, and when, based on the events and appointments it contains.
If the victim actually uses Google Docs, the attacker will have access to all documents, spreadsheets, presentations, forms, and drawings stored online by the victim--not just the ones that might have been included as a file attachment in an e-mail.
Accessing Google Maps could yield valuable information as well. Most users enter a home address as the default location to save time when searching for driving directions. That default location would be exposed to an attacker. If the victim has saved locations in My Maps--like a place of business, or frequently visited locations, those would all be available to the attacker as well.
It is up to Google, and China, and the FBI to get to the bottom of whether the compromised accounts are a state-sponsored act of international espionage, or just the work of run-of-the-mill spear phishing cyber-criminals. But, regardless of who is behind the attack, or what the underlying motives are, there is more than just e-mail at stake

iCloud to Cost $25 Yearly (Eventually)

iCloud to Cost $25 Yearly (Eventually)

Apple will initially offer its forthcoming iCloud service for free, though plans to eventually charge around $25 (about £15) per year for it, according to reports.
The LA Times claims that Apple has sewn up contracts with the four major music labels with a view tolaunching its cloud-based music service, citing sources familiar with the negotiations.
It is expected that iCloud will initially be offered for free to anyone buying music from Apple's iTunes Store, letting them upload their music to Apple's data centers. They will then be able to stream this music to Internet-connected devices such as Macs, iPhones, and iPods.
As well as a subscription service, Apple would sell advertising around iCloud, according to the report. Apple will share 70 percent of revenue from iCloud with record labels, as well as 12 percent with the copyright owners. The remaining 18 percent will be Apple's, according to the LA Times.
The report also claims that though it will initially focus on music, eventually iCloud will let customers upload movies and other digital content.
iCloud is expected to be more than a music-streaming service, though, replacing many of the functions of MobileMe. It may be limited to Mac OS X Lion, and iOS 5 users, it is believed.

Nokia 3G

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 10:20 PM PDT

  • What is 3G?

What is 3G?

Technology has transformed the manner of life, world over. Now comes a technology that takes life leaps ahead from what we know today. The advent of 3G technology will change the way we connect, how we live our passions and enjoy our entertainment. In short, every experience of life will get enhanced in this new era. Nokia has ensured that its customers can enjoy the best of this technology with its state-of-the-art, range of a 3G phones. But first, let's step back and understand what exactly is 3G.

3G is the '3rd Generation' technology for mobiles. It enhances internet speed that enables us to enjoy myriad features like video calling, faster audio and video streaming, quicker downloads, live TV and a superior social networking experience.

  • The 3G Experience

2G vs. 3G

The transition from 2G to 3G has been a much anticipated event and promises to mark an epoch in the way we consume mobile technology. But what exactly is the difference between the two? Allow us to explain.

Simply put, 2G primarily enables transmission of voice information while 3G provides the additional advantages of data transfer. 3G uses superior software called High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA), which allows users to send any kind of data, including graphics, audio and video content, many times faster than current 2G networks.

In short, 3G enables quicker downloads and uploads, allows features such as video calling, Web TV and the likes that were so far impossible or restricted in 2G technology. Currently about 50% of phones available in India offer 3G services and the future promises to offer many more such phones. Nokia steers ahead in this field with several 3G compatible phones in its oeuvre. In fact, the new range of Nokia phones contain 3G features that are designed to meet your every need like live web TV, faster emailing, anytime social networking and quick music downloads.

HSDPA vs. WCDMA

3G brings in an era of high internet speed and data transfer in mobile devices. However, 3G technology itself is available in two different forms – WCDMA and HSDPA. While the broader spectrums of 3G benefits are provided by both, they are some subtle differences between them. W-CDMA or Wideband Code Division Multiple Access is a 3G network interface that allows data connections up to 384 kbps per user (64kbps, 128kbps, 384 kbps) in optimum conditions.
HSDPA or High-Speed Downlink Packet Access on the other hand, is an enhanced 3G interface that enables higher data transfer speeds and capacity. While both are an integral part of 3G technology, the latter provides enhanced speed and capability and is also known as 3.5G.

Why Nokia?

No technology aces without a compatible device. For a complete 3G experience you need a phone that supports the new technology. Faster web browsing, high-speed video streaming and much more can be best experienced with Nokia 3G phones, designed exclusively for the new generation technology. It is important to note, that most Nokia HSPDA devices include a secondary camera for video calling. Now do more than just make calls – download music, make video calls, watch TV on the move, surf the net and lots more. Find phones for all groups – social network enthusiasts, music buffs, professionals, technology experts and game enthusiasts. With Nokia's wide range of large screen devices, the 3G experience is the best at all price points.

A Few Advantages Of Black And White Printers by John Rapalli

Posted: 02 Jun 2011 07:35 PM PDT

A Few Advantages Of Black And White Printers   by John Rapalli

Many types of printers exist. They range in size from the smallest photo printer to ones so large they take up a small room. But in spite of these obvious differences, they can be classified by their technology. Some are dot matrix, others use thermal or heat transfer, yet others use ink-jet, and some use lasers. Of the last classification, many are used by offices, most of which are black and white printers.
Even though these machines have a higher initial cost, with more expensive toner, they print many more copies per cartridge. So, overall they are less expensive to operate, especially for those who print on a regular basis.
Because of the way they operate they produce a much higher resolution. Good printers can reproduce images at ninety six hundred by twenty four hundred dots per inch. Another benefit of the way images are transferred to paper is that pictures can be printed without the loss of speed. Other types of machine are limited to around twenty to thirty pages per minute. High speed laser machines can reach speeds up to twelve thousand copies per hour. That is around ten times faster than other types of printers.
Laser machines use toner. Toner is powdered ink and tiny plastic pelts mixed together. These cartridges can be unused for long periods of time months without no adverse effects. When it is time to print, they print. There is no worry of drying ink to ruin the machine. The cartridges have enough storage capacity to last a month or more. But when they do become empty, they are easy to refill.
Since these machines work by fusing or melt toner to the paper, they must heat up when turned on. Once this component is ready, however, print jobs begin faster. The fastest printers can usually begin a job within fifteen seconds or so.
A number of these machines have the capacity of creating two sided prints. A page is printed on one side and sent to the duplex unit. From there, the paper is inverted and the backside is printed. A lot of these kinds of machines will also staple jobs as they are finished. Many even come with features found primarily in copy machines, such as the prioritizing of jobs. Some allow for job interruption.
'All in one machines' are more versatile variations. These devices come with a built-in copier, scanner, and fax machine. All of them have internal memory. Some can even hold as many as six hundred pages at a time. This makes them even faster. Once the first page is processed, the print job starts, even as additional pages are sent from the computer.
Most laser machines serve as network printers. They can be attached to the network either via cable, or via wireless connection. These printers can include features that mimic those of an office copier, such as job interrupt and job prioritizing.
While computer printers have been around for more than thirty years, laser technology is actually the oldest. These machines have been a feature in offices since their inception. Because of their advantages and dependability, they will probably be around for a long time to come. Black and white printers continue to rule the day.
